Ingredients

For the Bacon Dogs

  • 8 pieces quality beef or turkey hot dogs Or vegan alternatives
  • 8 strips bacon Try turkey bacon for a lighter version
  • 8 pieces soft hot dog buns Opt for whole-grain buns for added nutrition

For the Bourbon-Glazed Onions

  • 2 medium-sized onions Thinly sliced
  • ¼ cup bourbon whiskey
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar Consider coconut sugar for a healthier option
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper Freshly cracked
  • chili powder Optional, for an extra kick
  • fresh chives or parsley For garnish

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • Place the bacon strips on a baking sheet and cook for about 15-20 minutes until crispy, flipping halfway through.
  • While the bacon is cooking, heat a skillet over medium heat and add the sliced onions with a pinch of salt, stirring frequently for about 10 minutes until caramelized.
  • Once onions are soft, add bourbon, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, garlic powder, and black pepper. Cook for another 5-7 minutes until the liquid has reduced and the onions are sticky and glossy.
  • Remove the bacon from the oven and wrap each hot dog with a strip of bacon, securing it with toothpicks if necessary.
  • Place the bacon-wrapped hot dogs on a baking sheet and bake for approximately 25 minutes, or until the bacon is crispy.

Serving

  • Once ready, place the bacon-wrapped hot dogs in your hot dog buns and top generously with bourbon-glazed onions. Garnish with fresh chives or parsley.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. To reheat, wrap them in foil and warm in the oven. For added nutrition, consider using turkey or plant-based hot dogs and whole-grain or gluten-free buns.
