Hot Dog Sauce Recipe
A thick, savory West Virginia-style hot dog sauce made with ground beef, peppers, and spices. Perfect for topping your favorite hot dogs.
- - 1½ lbs ground beef 85/15
- - 14.5 oz can beef broth
- - 1 yellow onion finely diced
- - 1 hot pepper e.g., jalapeño, finely minced
- - 1 small red bell pepper finely diced
- - 7 oz can tomato paste
- - 1–2 tbsp chili powder
- - 2 tsp cumin
- - 2 tsp garlic powder
- - 2 tsp paprika
- - ½ tsp cayenne powder
- - ½ tsp turmeric optional
- - 12 oz jar Heinz chili sauce or ½ cup ketchup
- - Salt pepper, and sugar (to taste)
Brown the beef in a skillet over medium-high heat. Drain excess fat, leaving 2 tsp in the skillet.
Cook onions, hot pepper, and bell pepper until softened. Add spices and cook for 1 minute.
Stir in tomato paste and cook for 1–3 minutes.
Combine beef, broth, and chili sauce in the skillet. Simmer for 30 minutes.
Adjust seasoning and serve over hot dogs with your favorite toppings.
